Americans Are Discovering Korean Soju: The Rise of K-Drinking Culture and Kimchi Cocktails

As K-pop and Korean food gain worldwide popularity, international interest is expanding to Korean drinking culture. In the United States, Korean soju and cocktails made with soju are attracting attention. A drink that is familiar in Korea is being combined with new flavors and drinking traditions overseas.

In some American bars and restaurants, alcohol regulations affect how drinks can be served and consumed. Against this backdrop, soju is sometimes served by the glass or used as a cocktail ingredient. Rather than drinking it straight, people experiment with fruit, sparkling drinks, and juices to create their own combinations.

But one particularly unusual idea has also attracted attention: cocktails made with kimchi juice.

A Cocktail Made with Kimchi Juice?

Around a decade ago, a kimchi cocktail recipe circulated through a Korean food promotion website operated by the Korea Tourism Organization. The recipe sparked considerable discussion online, including negative reactions from Korean internet users.

Some people questioned why anyone would want to drink kimchi juice, while others wondered who would enjoy a cocktail with a strong garlic aroma. Critics also questioned whether this was an appropriate way to introduce Korean food culture to international visitors.

Looking at the recipe helps explain why it attracted such strong reactions.

The recipe called for crushing two cloves of garlic in a glass and adding approximately one and a half shots of soju. Kimchi juice, salt, and pepper were then added, followed by ice and tomato juice. A piece of kimchi could also be used as a garnish.

Combining familiar Korean ingredients in such an unconventional way made the drink seem unusual to many people.

How Did Kimchi Cocktails Attract International Interest?

Kimchi cocktails may seem far removed from traditional Korean drinking culture, but they offer an interesting combination of kimchi’s bold flavor and the creativity of modern mixology.

Some recipes use kimchi juice and tomato juice to create a drink inspired by a Bloody Mary. A traditional Bloody Mary is generally made with vodka and tomato juice. Adding kimchi juice and spicy ingredients can create a savory, tangy, and spicy variation.

However, claims that kimchi cocktails are selling widely across the United States should be verified using reliable sales data or reporting. A specialty drink offered by individual bars is not necessarily representative of a nationwide consumer trend.

Korean Soju Culture Is Evolving Overseas

In Korea, soju is commonly mixed with beer to make somaek, or combined with soft drinks and fruit juices to create different flavors. Bottle-opening techniques, dramatic bottle-shaking routines, and drinking games are also recognizable elements of Korean drinking culture.

These traditions can be intriguing to international consumers. Some people imitate Korean-style soju bottle tricks or try mixing soju with beer in the same way they have seen in Korean social settings.

There are also many ways to soften soju’s distinctive aroma and alcoholic taste. Adding fruit or juice can bring out sweeter flavors, while sparkling drinks can create a lighter, more refreshing combination.

Why Soju and Fruit Make a Popular Combination

Soju can be mixed with fruit and other beverages in many different ways. For example, strawberries and strawberry milk can create a smooth, sweet flavor. Green grapes, ice, and sparkling drinks can turn grape-flavored soju into a refreshing cocktail-style beverage.

Mixing soju with a yogurt drink is another combination people enjoy. The sweet and tangy flavor may make the alcohol taste less pronounced. However, adding other beverages does not remove the alcohol, and sweet flavors can make a drink seem weaker than it actually is.

The result is that soju can taste very different depending on the ingredients and proportions used. A familiar Korean drinking style can become a source of new cocktail ideas overseas.

K-Drinking Culture Is Gaining International Attention

The global popularity of Korean culture is expanding beyond music, dramas, and food into beverages and alcoholic drinks. Soju is one of Korea’s best-known alcoholic beverages, and international consumers are discovering it through Korean meals and cocktails.

Fruit-flavored soju and soju-based cocktails may be more approachable for people who are unfamiliar with the drink’s traditional flavor. Korean drinking customs and distinctive bottle-opening routines can also offer an interesting cultural experience.

However, the scale and speed of soju’s international growth should be assessed using country-specific sales figures, export statistics, and industry data. Growing international interest and rising sales volumes are related, but they are not the same thing.

How will Korean soju continue to evolve overseas? From traditional servings to fruit cocktails and unconventional combinations featuring kimchi juice, Korean drinking culture is meeting local tastes around the world and developing in new directions.
